Surviving Auditions
Sleep!
Get some sleep before your shifts, you don’t want to be a zombie while you’re in the department! I know this is easier said than done most nights, especially since you’re signing up for a life of changing shifts. The Sleep Foundation has a page on how to get the best sleep possible
Eat!
Eat whenever you can is a mantra of… well, most specialities really. If a resident or an attending offers to buy you food, take them up on that. We’re not asking as a trick, we just remember how tired/hungry/broke y’all are and want to help wherever we can. You will also get a $10/day meal stipend, so hopefully you’ll be able to save some of that loan money for other things.
“Own your patients” - rechecks!
This will get you infinite brownie points with your attendings. Go recheck your patients after they get treatments, after their CT results come back, after they sneeze (ok maybe not that one). This is particularly important if you have a truly sick patient, you should be in there often to make sure they’re still doing ok.
Be Techable!
We don't expect you to know everything, but we do expect you to be ready to learn. You're not gonna know every question an attending asks but if you're engaged while they're teaching, they'll notice and appreciate it
Have fun!
We want to know that you want to be here! You picked EM for a reason, hopefully at least in part because it’s a fun job. Let us see that while you’re here. You’re signing up for 3 years here, we want to make sure you’re gonna enjoy it!
