Schedule

  • You will be expected to work 15 shifts, either 9 or 10 hours

  • If you need certain days off for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible! We can’t make any promises but we’ll do our best to schedule around the days you need

  • You’ll be required to attend a procedures day with some of the residents and attendings to practice suturing, ultrasound, slit-lamp, and airway skills. It’s very low key and a great time to practice procedures and chat with residents/attendings

  • There will be conference days every Wednesday from 10-3 that you’ll be required to attend. The reading schedule can be found HERE and look at the resources section for our suggestions on how to be prepared

Expectations

On Shift

  • Be ready to go 15 minutes early. We have a lot of former military and they very much subscribe to the idea that if you’re not early, you’re late.

  • Be proactive about going to see patients as they show up in your pod. Try to let the attending know before you go in, but if he/she is busy then go see the patient and report back after you’re done

  • If you see a truly sick patient (surgical abdomen, STEMI, etc) GO GET YOUR ATTENDING! You might be wrong and the patient is actually fine, but we would rather you have a low threshold for this vs letting a sick patient sit longer than needed

  • You will be able to and expected to put in orders. Your orders will have to be cleared by the attending before anything actually happens, but we want you to get used to actually putting things in since you’ll be a doctor next year (crazy isn’t it?)

  • You will receive informal evaluations from the attending you worked with on your shift, as well as more formal evaluations through New Innovations.

Didactics

  • Don’t be late and try to learn something! These are generally pretty informal and another good chance to get to know some of the residents/faculty (between lectures that is). You will sit in on our lectures as well as having student specific lectures. If you have questions, ask questions! All of the Core Faculty love to teach, otherwise they wouldn’t be here

Final presentations

  • You will be expected to give a 10 minute presentation on an interesting case you saw while on shift. If you haven’t done a case presentation in the past or if you have any questions just ask one of the residents and we’ll be glad to help you out. Just be sure to pick something YOU thought was interesting, your excitement (or lack thereof) for the case will show through during your presentation.

Final exam

  • There will be a final exam at the end of your rotation, the SAEM M4 exam which is tailored to 4th year students in Emergency Medicine.

  • The SAEM cirriculum will help guide your studying for the exam

  • There is also a Quizlet deck that many students have found helpful

Housing

Housing will be provided at an apartment near the hospital for free. You will likely be sharing the space with other students, but did we mention it was free? You are welcome to find your own housing if you would prefer, but we hope having this option will help alleviate some of the stress and financial burden that comes with auditioning.
